Did you know that there is a national day recognising this? That’s right! Today is “Make Your Dreams Come True Day”
Tricky huh?! As I expect most of us really aren’t ‘living the dream’ at the moment. We would all be doing something a bit different if we weren’t living with such restrictions upon us. Even if we are lucky in the context of being stuck at home, we are all missing people, connections, physical contact, and more.
I’m not going to dwell on the current situation though, there are enough places to go and read about this, other than this blog!
Can you make your dreams come true? Or are your dreams too big, too out of reach, or too fantastical? (I love that word!)
I am a believer in dreams coming true – completely. Anything is possible. How does that make you feel when you read that? Am I being annoyingly optimistic or annoyingly simplistic? Well, I believe I am neither!
You can make your dreams come true.
Unlike my last post, I’m not really talking about goals here. This is something bigger: to me, a dream to come true, is more visionary. Do you have a vision of how you want life to be?
A lot of people don’t. I think there are a lot of people in the world who know what they don’t want, but for one reason or another haven’t been able to put their finger on what it is they actually do want. Also, people find it hard to ‘visualise’ something different. Even the smallest of life changes can feel alien or out of reach: ‘I can’t do or have that’, it’s not available to someone like me.
I have news for you – Your dreams for your life are almost never out of reach! Most people want for their life that which is within their reach. Most people are not that far away from what they want. But what most people don’t do is nail it down: the dreams stay unfocused and wild, or unengaged with due to lack of time, or support or whatever other reason (excuse) is available. Which leaves you thinking, ‘oh I can never do or have that’ Vicious circle eh?!
Your dream can come true.
What is your dream? How does it make you feel when you really pin it down? Are you able to explore it more? What do you need to do in order to make it come true?
Some people will be using their time over the pandemic to reevaluate their goals, career, etc. Are you one of these people? Or is it just too overwhelming? Of course if you are stuck at home with kids, trying to juggle a load plates, work, house, schooling, you really may not be spending any time reviewing… But maybe you can, when lying in bed at night? Do you want things to go back to just exactly how they were? Are there some changes that you’ve made that you are actually happier with? What could be better?
I use a visioning exercise with my clients when we first start working, to really get them to engage with their preferred future. However wild it may seem, there are always elements that are already in place, and the other elements are just never outside of their reach – with a little work!
I remember when I was first introduced to visualisation as a technique for identifying my dreams – I was so frustrated as I just couldn’t do it! I was in a place at the time where ‘I didn’t dare to dream’. I had left my (now ex) husband, I was sofa-surfing, and life was really not where I wanted it to be at all. I had known that I didn’t want what I had, but I hadn’t really thought about what I wanted. So the middle ground (no mans land) was a very messy and emotional place!
My dream did come though, and it came true! I worked hard on myself and my existence, my psyche and life changed as a result. I still use visualisation for my next steps. I haven’t arrived! The dream grows and changes, life goes on! Just because I achieved one part of the dream, doesn’t mean there isn’t more to come.
Exciting! (Except for the pandemic…)
So, do you have a dream? Are you living the dream?! What’s next for you within your dream for the future?
Make your dream come true!
